As the southernmost state, Florida is famed for many exciting elements, from year-round sunshine and good weather (aside from unpleasant hurricanes) to beautiful ocean tides, bays, and more than the occasional alligator. There are also 25 scenic highways to travel, with lots of fun along the way, whether you enjoy road tripping in a car, motorcycle, getting out and bicycling, or walking or hiking. Although the choices are countless, here are some ideas for seeing the sights without breaking the bank at an amusement park:

  • The Everglades – this grassy sanctuary is not just one of the wonders of Florida, but the world. With 60 miles of marsh to enjoy, you can enter the Everglades just above the Florida Keys, or at other points such as Corkscrew Swamp, Big Cypress, or numerous areas offering airboat rides. Wildlife like raccoons, bobcats, fox, and deer populate these areas—including the elusive Florida Panther, a fascinating subspecies of the mountain lion that has had a resurgence in population during an ongoing recovery program for the endangered cats that require a large area to roam.
  • Kennedy Space Center – whether you are traveling with your kids, on a road trip alone, or navigating the Sunshine State with another group of adults, this area (in connection with NASA) offers huge entertainment combined with fascinating educational information, grouped into numerous exhibits and attractions.
  • Museums – while many out-of-state Florida enthusiasts are all about Disney World, they could miss out on numerous wonderful, small museums from the Museum of Discovery and Science or the Florida Maritime Museum to the Salvador Dali Museum—to Ringling or St. Augustine’s famed Potter’s Wax Museum or Ripley’s Believe it or Not.
  • Go to the opera – Sarasota Opera has been offering impressive performances since 1973, housed in a completely restored, historic theater. You can enjoy listening to opera or symphony, popular music, seeing art films, dance and ballet, and even get some laughs in watching stand-up comedy there.
  • See some lighthouses – from Key West Light to Ponce de Leon Light, or further north at Pensacola Light, these structures are all evidence of the rich history of Florida.
