complex regional pain syndrome Relatively Minor Injuries
March 9, 2018

We have so many more, innovative, safety mechanisms in cars today, along with laws that prohibit driving while impaired, as well as texting while driving. Seatbelts are required to be worn in most states, and children must be in the proper car seats for their height, weight, and age. Information abounds regarding the dangers of distracted driving, drunk driving, speeding, and more, yet traffic fatalities only continue to rise, along with accidents on all levels.

If you survived a car accident with only a minor injury, you may have been quite surprised and dismayed to develop painful—and even disabling symptoms—due to complex regional pain syndrome.

Type 1 CRPS can develop after something as simple as a sprain, and an injury that did not cause nerve damage itself. Type 2 CRPS develops after what is usually obvious damage to the nervous system.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, symptoms vary for those suffering from CRPS, but often begin or include discomfort associated with the skin on one limb.

If you have developed CRPS, you may feel as if your arm or leg is burning, or conversely it may feel cold and clammy upon being touched. The skin may also be so sensitive that you cannot bear for anything to touch that area. Nails and hair on the arm or leg may begin growing slower or faster, and the appearance of the skin may be thin or shiny.

And while symptoms caused to the skin by CRPS may be extremely uncomfortable, it can be much worse—and affect your quality of life much further—if you are having problems moving. Obviously, as the limbs are affected, there may be issues with movement, but CRPS can also be much more serious in terms of extreme joint stiffness and problems coordinating the arms and legs.

Due to the pain, you may be less inclined to move, and muscles can begin to atrophy. CRPS also sometimes results in fixed postures due to muscular tightening, such as a foot or hand remaining in a twisted or curled position. Rehabilitation may be prescribed for more extreme cases. Medications vary, depending on the severity, from basic pain relievers to more serious treatment. The condition may last for months, or indefinitely.
